Description: Since her twin brother, Eddie, drowned five years ago, sixteen-year-old Elsie Main has tried to remember what really happened that fateful day on the beach. One minute Eddie was there, and the next he was gone. Seventeen-year-old Tay McKenzie is a cute and mysterious boy that Elsie meets in her favorite boathouse hangout. When Tay introduces Elsie to the world of freediving, she vows to find the answers she seeks at the bottom of the sea. Review: This book was a really interesting read and gave me a lot of mixed feelings. For one thing, I love that it is set in a remote town in Scotland. It sounds absolutely beautiful and is the perfect setting for this story. Another thing I really liked is the fact that the main character, Elsie, does not have a "perfect body" like a lot of other characters in books and also that she is okay with that; in fact, she even embraces it. I had pretty strong feelings from the start of the book and really liked the mystery aspect at the beginning of the book. The only thing I didn't really like was the weirdness of some of it... Some of the characters behaved in weird ways or did weird things and it kinda made me uncomfortable and uneasy and I'm not sure people are actually like that. I'm not sure. The thing is, a lot of contemporaries have this weird aspect about them though. I don't really like said weirdness because it's like leaving a weird aftertaste in your mouth. I also didn't like the influence one character was on another character (or their reckless behavior). But other than those two things, I did enjoy this book. It had a focus not regularly seen in YA, had a clever title, was set in short chapters, and I really did enjoy the ending. I read this book in four days because it was so hard to put down. If you don't mind books like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, then I recommend checking this book out! Rating: 3/5 *An ARC of this book was sent to my library from the publisher and that is how I read this book! |
