Description: Greg Gaines is the last master of high school espionage, able to disappear at will into any social environment. He has only one friend, Earl, and together they spend their time making movies, their own incomprehensible versions of Coppola and Herzog cult classics. Until Greg’s mother forces him to rekindle his childhood friendship with Rachel. Rachel has been diagnosed with leukemia—-cue extreme adolescent awkwardness—-but a parental mandate has been issued and must be obeyed. When Rachel stops treatment, Greg and Earl decide the thing to do is to make a film for her, which turns into the Worst Film Ever Made and becomes a turning point in each of their lives. And all at once Greg must abandon invisibility and stand in the spotlight. Review: This book was hilarious. I've always wanted a book where the main character has a crude sense of humor, similar to mine and my friends'. This book accomplished that. Even though there are serious topics discussed in this book, I definitely laughed out loud quite frequently. In addition to the LOL-worthy status this book maintains, it also has a charisma to it that makes you never want to set it down. However, there was something about this book that seemed a little off. I can't quite place my finger on what it is, but it was bothering me throughout the book after I was around 3/4 in the book. The closest I can get to it is that there is Greg's lack of emotion towards Rachel. I mean, there are spurts of tears every now and then but for the most part, he only thinks of himself. I know this isn't supposed to be a cheesy trope-filled book, but that isn't an excuse to be void of anything besides jokes because in reality there are going to be emotions. That toned down my initial love for the book, but I still think the book was overall hilarious and recommend it to people who want a funny read. Yes, there are certain points that can be considered sad, but the main character isn't really attached to anyone so it's not that hard to cope with. The formatting is also creative since some of the book is told in a movie script format. Overall, it was a pretty decent book. Rating: 3/5 |
